What is BMI?

Body Mass Index (BMI) is a widely used health metric that assesses whether a person has a healthy body weight relative to their height. It helps classify individuals into different weight categories.

BMI Categories (According to WHO Standards)

  • Underweight – BMI less than 18.5
  • Normal Weight – BMI between 18.5 and 24.9
  • Overweight – BMI between 25 and 29.9
  • Obesity Class I – BMI between 30 and 34.9 (Moderate risk of weight-related health issues)
  • Obesity Class II – BMI between 35 and 39.9 (High risk of weight-related health issues)
  • Obesity Class III – BMI 40 or higher (Severe risk of weight-related health issues)

Limitations of the BMI Calculator

While BMI is a useful tool for assessing general weight categories, it has some limitations:

  • Does not distinguish between fat and muscle – A highly muscular individual may have a high BMI but not have excess body fat.
  • Does not account for body composition – Fat distribution (e.g., visceral fat vs. subcutaneous fat) is not considered.
  • Not ideal for certain groups – BMI may be less accurate for older adults, athletes, pregnant women, and people with a very high or very low muscle mass.
  • Does not measure overall health – BMI does not take into account other important health factors such as metabolic health, fitness level, or medical conditions.

For a more accurate assessment of health risks, BMI should be used alongside other measurements such as waist-to-hip ratio, body fat percentage, and overall lifestyle factors.
